About
Rebecca Higgins - Hampshire British Sign Language Interpreter
Born in East Yorkshire, I actually grew up and was educated in
Shropshire. I joined the Royal Air Force at 18 and trained as an
Avionics Technician; served for 12 years and achieved the rank of
Corporal. This experience has certainly helped with some of the
more challenging and working conditions I have had to endure over
the years, well Bosnia in the winter is pretty miserable! Towards
the end of my service I developed a keen interest in British Sign
Language and the needs of deaf people so decided to re-train in
readiness for a new life in ‘civvy’ street.
My Qualifications and Experience.
I started studying BSL at night class and joined the Andover Deaf
Club, later becoming Secretary. I began to use my signing skills
professionally in 2003 as a Communication Support Worker (CSW) in
Further Education and a Support worker for Social Services.
A varied and interesting ‘apprenticeship’ has enabled
to me to experience a wide variety of work type and working environments,
including: Office Support, Outward Bound Courses, the Health Service
(NHS) and Education. Within the field of Education I have assisted
students in achieving a range of qualifications from Key Stage 1
to Degree level in numerous subjects. Examples of these are Motor
Vehicle Studies, Manicure Skills, Environmental Science and Fine
Art.
Self employed as a full time Interpreter since 2008, I continued
studying and achieved the NVQ 6 BSL Interpreting. I am now Registered
with the NRCDP as a Fully Qualified Interpreter, registration number
1001466. I have an enhanced CRB' and carry full insurance.
